Mark Dvoretsky started his career as a very strong player, but soon enough discovered his true calling.

A top-50 player in his prime he quit his playing career to become the most recognised trainer of our time. His methods, based on thorough analytical approach, showed immediate success when one of his first students, Valery Chekhov, became a World Junior Champion in 1975. This success was later repeated by his most famous students, Artur Jussupow (in 1977) and Sergey Dolmatov (in 1978).

The Commission for World Championships and Olympiads does not approve the proposal of RCF to allow the commercial matches for the World Championship title. The RCF is invited to come up with the opinion of the majority of the top players, and if they will support this proposal, it is going to be discussed on the FIDE Congress next year.

A tournament with one of the longest traditions in modern history, the traditional Poikovsky tournament bears the name of Anatoly Karpov since 2000. The 17th edition this year took place from 23 July to 1 August and it was again part of the ACP Tour. We are very proud to have this excellent tournament as our partner tournament that is happy to accommodate our wild cards every year.

The Russian Chess Federation submitted an official proposal to the FIDE Congress for an addition to the current World Championship Cycle rules: anyone guaranteeing a required prize-fund can challenge the reigning World Champion.

Uncompromising Chess Battles in Jerusalem

The third international tournament in memory of Gideon Japhet was concluded last weekend in the Secondary School of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. It was the highlight of a spectacular summer chess festivity in the Israeli capital throughout the first half of July, starting with the National Cup Games played in the first country’s railway station compound and continuing with a mass simultaneous exhibition at the foot of the Tower of David.

The ACP Open in Warsaw, the Najdorf Memorial is under way (8-16 July) and the official site is http://www.poloniachess.pl/najdorf2016/index.php?lang=en where you can also follow the games live. Over 20 ACP wild cards are participating in a very strong and “dense” open tournament with 25 players rated over 2600. Apart from the main prizes there are also special prizes for ACP Premiums worth 3 000 EUR. The main aim of this ACP Opens project is to provide a lot of our members with good conditions and opportunities to play.

Warsaw

A legend during his lifetime, Viktor Korchnoi was a challenger to the world title from 1962 until 1991. A relentless workaholic and professional both on and off the board he managed to shape his style in order to reach the summit of the chess world only to succumb at the last hurdle - he stumbled three times, as in 1974 he would have become a World Champion by beating Karpov in the Candidates final. With a complicated character and even more complicated life he seemed to have a neverending supply of energy which drove him forward until the end.

The ACP is proud to present the results of the voting for the Tournament of the Year. There were some surprising outcomes (two ties!) and otherwise interesting results, which you can see below.

According to our members the best Round-Robin in the past year was the Tata Steel tournament. The 14-player all-play-all had everything: a mix of elite, local and female players and it was very exciting to watch. Here is the complete graph:
